INTERNSHIPS

NEW IN 2022: THREE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES!

In 2022, Teens Grow Greens will offer a series of

three paid leadership internships

for high school students:

Leading My Life:

Healthy Brains, Bodies, & Bank Accounts

Leading For Justice:

Food Sovereignty & Urban Gardening

Leading Through Innovation:

Entrepreneurship & Personal Branding

Internships can be experienced alone or in combination, but all three provide life and career skills training through hands-on learning, storytelling, systems thinking, guest speakers and field trips, and a connection to the earth.

All three internships are grounded in our values of

Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience.

Personal and community leadership is developed in each internship, with those Teens in one internship leading the orientations for the next group of Teens.  And every Teen leaves with a resume, digital badges connected to skills they have acquired, and connections to jobs and other opportunities after they graduate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO CAN APPLY?

Any Milwaukee-area high school student enrolled in MPS, charter school, private school, or homeschool.

Seniors who are planning on attending college in Fall 2022 will need to consider the likelihood that they will not be able to commit to Internship 2 (which ends September 12) or Internship 3 (which ends November 12), especially if they will not reside in Milwaukee.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION AND HIRING PROCESS?

  • Teens can complete an online application for an internship during the open application periods below:

  • Internship 1: September 16 - November 12, 2021

  • Internship 2:  March 14 - May 8, 2022

  • Internship 3: March 14 - August 12, 2022

  • Once their application is received, applicants will receive an invitation via email to sign up for a 20-minute virtual interview.

  • All applicants will receive an email after the application window closes letting them know whether they've been hired or not.   Teens accepted to an internship will need to complete government employment and tax forms, all of which require certain kinds of documentation (like ID, social security number, etc.) at a required Saturday workshop.

  • Once all forms and documents are received and approved, Teens Grow Greens helps new hires open a bank account if they do not already have one (for direct deposit of their paychecks).

HOW MANY INTERNSHIPS CAN I APPLY FOR?

You may apply during the open application periods listed above  for as many internship experiences as you can commit to:

  • Internship 1 only

  • Internship 2 only

  • Internship 3 only

  • Internships 1 + 2

  • Internships 1 + 3

  • Internships 2 + 3

  • Internships 1 + 2 + 3

If you are hired for Internship 1 and choose to move on to Internships 2 or 3, you will not have to re-apply and re-interview, only make a new commitment.  If you are first hired for Internship 2 and choose to move on to Internship 3, you won’t have to re-interview either, only make a new commitment.

A commitment to an internship means that you choose to  have no other commitments (such as a sport, summer camp, or other job) that would compete with the days and times of the Teens Grow Greens internship.  It also means that you can commit to completing the entire internship experience.

Interns who commit to all three internship experiences (a total of 9.5 months) are eligible to receive a Ryan Graham Scholarship and to apply for one of our Pre-Apprenticeships: Education, Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, or Hospitality.

HOW MANY SPOTS ARE OPEN FOR EACH INTERNSHIP?

We can hire up to 30  Northside and 30 Southside interns each year.   At the end of each internship, we will fill open intern positions with new hires.

CAN I APPLY FOR DIFFERENT INTERNSHIPS IN DIFFERENT YEARS?

Yes.  For instance, you may be able to commit to only Internship 1 as a freshman, but you can apply and interview for Internships 2 and/or 3 as a sophomore if your schedule is free and your interest is still there.

WILL THE INTERNSHIP BE VIRTUAL, IN-PERSON, OR HYBRID?

Internships 1 and 3, which overlap with the school year, will be hybrid, with virtual work sessions during weekdays and longer in-person sessions on Saturdays.  The summer Internship 2 will be mostly in-person, with special virtual opportunities as they arise.

Teens Grow Greens is constantly monitoring the latest CDC recommendations, however, regarding in-person gatherings and reserves the right to change the work environment accordingly for the safety and health of the interns and the entire Teens Grow Greens team. (Link to our current COVID policies as of Aug. 2021)

HOW MUCH IS THE HOURLY WAGE?  ARE THERE RAISES?

Internship 1 (which is 4 months and entails a lot of learning and training) pays $8.50/hour.  Internship 2 (which is 3 months and requires a lot of manual labor) pays $9.50/hour.  And Internship 3 (which is only 2 months and is very time-intensive and hands-on) pays $10.50/hour.  Someone going from one internship to another will obviously receive a raise in pay.

WHAT OTHER  INCENTIVES ARE THERE FOR COMPLETING EACH INTERNSHIP?

Internship incentives include:

  • Toward the end of each internship, current interns will lead the orientation for the following internship.

  • Interns will collect digital badges connected to skills they have attained which can be used on their resumes and future job and college applications.

  • Each internship experience will host a mini-graduation for its participants, with an end-of-the-year graduation for everyone who participated.

  • Those interns who complete all 3 internship experiences are eligible for a $3,000 Ryan Graham Scholarship and Pre-Apprenticeship positions, which start at $12.00/hour.

Going into the program, I thought it was going to be simple and easy because I already knew the basics about gardening, plants, and vegetables . . . but it wasn't.  I came to realize the program has so much to offer you, especially since you are a high school student.
